Hello, everyone. I’m Roslyn, your specialist in codependency recovery. Today, our focus is on the five “Rs” – a strategy for handling challenging situations as we embark on this journey. As we delve into this work, you’ll discover that these situations present themselves to offer opportunities for new responses.
Recognise
The first “R” is to Recognise and Identify the situation. It’s immensely valuable to have someone to discuss this with, helping to gain a more objective perspective.
Respond
Next is to Respond, but not in the old, ingrained way driven by our subconscious programming. Remember, our subconscious influences 95% of our consciousness, so we’ve got 5% to steer that ship differently. It’s about contemplating new approaches – how can we do things differently rather than reacting impulsively? By slowing down and approaching these situations differently, we aim for improved outcomes each time. This process entails overcoming old patterns and reshaping our subconscious mind.
Reframe
Reframe is the third “R.” It’s about looking at these situations from another angle, even if it’s challenging. Sometimes, having a coach or mentor who’s not emotionally attached can provide a different perspective and guide us in reshaping our responses for a more fulfilling life.
Release/Review Benefits
Next, we consider the Benefits. We ponder how these situations serve us because nothing occurs randomly; it’s happening for us, not to us. By recognising the lessons and insights we gain from these experiences, we can change and grow internally. It’s essential to cultivate gratitude in these moments. Again, a coach or mentor can help point out things to assist in our mental retraining.
Retrain
Lastly, we have the fifth “R” – Retrain. Keep working on this process repeatedly. We’ll always encounter challenges, especially when we’re committed to emotional regulation, recovery work, and codependence healing. We’ll be provided with the people, places, and things that enable us to apply our new knowledge. Having someone who’s walked the path before can be invaluable.
To recap: Recognise, Respond differently, Reframe, Review the Benefits (Release), and Retrain. Keep retraining, and you’ll see progress.
